Cornerstone University has announced a 25% reduction in academic fees in a move aimed at addressing the high university dropout rate in Uganda and improving graduation rates.
The announcement was made by the university’s Vice Chancellor Richmond Wandera, who described financial hardship as one of the biggest barriers preventing students from completing their university education.
“The inability to meet academic fees is a significant barrier preventing many deserving students from realizing their potential and completing their university education,” Dr Wandera said, noting that the issue has become a major challenge across higher learning institutions in Uganda.
Education analysts estimate that nearly 30% of students who enroll in universities in Uganda do not complete their studies, with financial constraints cited as the leading cause.
Cornerstone University says the 25% fee reduction is intended to lower the financial burden on students and enable more learners to complete their degrees without interruption caused by tuition arrears.
University officials describe the fee cut not simply as a discount but as a strategic investment in student retention and academic completion.
By reducing tuition costs, the institution hopes students will be able to focus more on their studies rather than financial pressure.
Beyond reducing tuition fees, the university is also strengthening student support systems. According to Dr Kato Brian, the institution is investing in academic support, counselling, and career guidance to ensure students receive holistic support during their studies.
“Our commitment extends beyond just the classroom. We are dedicated to nurturing an environment where students feel supported academically, personally, and are actively prepared for their future careers,” Dr. Kato said.
University management also used the announcement to call for broader reforms in Uganda’s higher education curriculum. Dr. Wandera urged policymakers to review university curricula to ensure graduates are equipped with practical skills relevant to the modern job market.
“We must equip our graduates with skills and competencies that are relevant to today’s dynamic job market. The current system often produces graduates who, despite holding degrees, are not fully prepared for employment and entrepreneurship,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of practical training, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurship education as key areas that universities must strengthen to reduce graduate unemployment.
Education experts say the high university dropout rate has wider implications for national development, as it leads to lost human capital and reduced productivity in the long term. Increasing graduation rates and improving graduate employability are therefore seen as critical to Uganda’s economic growth.
Cornerstone University believes its fee reduction strategy, combined with student support programs and advocacy for curriculum reform, could help improve student completion rates and contribute to the development of a more skilled workforce.
“Our goal is to democratize higher education, ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of academic achievement. Investing in our students’ education is investing in Uganda’s future,” Dr. Wandera said.
The university says it remains committed to making quality education more accessible and relevant, preparing students not only for employment but also for entrepreneurship and lifelong career growth.
